2019 Goal Setting

It’s the time of year when we tend to reflect on what we have accomplished in the last twelve months, and what we wish to accomplish in the coming twelve months. I used to be a firm believer in setting New Years resolutions but, like many people, even with the best intentions, I rarely ever stuck to them. At the end of every year I’d feel guilty that I hadn’t stuck to my resolutions, regardless of how many wonderful things I had accomplished.

So now I set goals. Maybe they’re the same thing, maybe they’re not. My mind differentiates them so it works for me. I keep the list small, with goals that are achievable, and I keep all of my goals focused on the bigger picture of where I want my life to be. Each of my goals is a step towards a bigger goal, like a check list.

For example some of my goals for 2018 were:

  • Finish the first draft of Samhain Sorcery
  • Finish the first draft of The Lady of Zion (my next book)
  • Create website for www.bforresterauthor.com
  • Start a Blog at www.bforresterauthor.com
  • Read and return my brother’s books on social media marketing
  • Read 50 books on my Goodreads list
  • Get more involved in my local community
  • Make healthier choices

These are all goals that I’ve been able to achieve (although healthy eating doesn’t always stay the course).  This year I really focused on growing my business, because being an indie author is running a small business, and honing my writing skills. I didn’t get as far as I’d hoped but I did make a lot of progress this year.

So over this weekend I’ve been spending time with my family and contemplating what goals I want to set myself for next year. I think it was an Author Like A Boss Podcast interview with Sheri Fink where she mentioned that all of your decisions/choices should be getting you one step closer to your goal, if it doesn’t serve your purpose then it isn’t worth your time. That really struck a chord with me and has been something I’ve taken on board.

Are you setting goals for 2019? What’s one thing you’d like to cross off your list?
